Everything you need to know about moving insurance

Updated: Jul 29

Moving can be an exciting and busy time, but it’s essential to protect your belongings throughout the process. While moving companies take precautions to ensure the safe transport of your goods, accidents or unforeseen events can still occur. That’s why it’s crucial to understand the types of insurance coverage available and choose the right option for your needs.

These tips are taken from our free moving guide "Jernick's Guide To A Stress-Free Move". We give a hard copy version of this booklet to our customers as part of their onboarding package. You can download our moving guide here.

Types of Coverage

Basic Coverage (Released Value Protection)

Most moving companies offer basic coverage, also known as released value protection, at no additional cost. This type of coverage provides compensation for lost or damaged items based on their weight, rather than their actual value. Typically, the coverage is set at a predetermined amount per pound, such as $0.60 per pound per item. While this coverage is the most economical option, it may not adequately reimburse you for the full value of your belongings.

Full-Value Protection

For more comprehensive coverage, you can opt for full-value protection. This coverage typically requires an additional fee but provides greater peace of mind. With full-value protection, if any of your items are lost, damaged, or destroyed during the move, the moving company is responsible for either repairing the item, replacing it with a similar item, or providing the monetary value for its repair or replacement. It’s important to note that specific limitations and deductibles may apply, so carefully review the terms and conditions of the policy.

Third-Party Insurance

If you require additional coverage beyond what the moving company offers, you have the option to purchase third-party insurance. Third-party insurers specialize in providing moving insurance and can offer more comprehensive coverage tailored to your specific needs. This type of insurance often covers the full value of your belongings and provides protection against a broader range of risks, such as natural disasters or theft. Research different insurance providers, compare their policies, and choose one that best aligns with your requirements.

Determining the Right Type of Insurance for You

Choosing the right type of insurance coverage depends on several factors, including the value of your belongings, the level of risk you’re comfortable with, and your budget. Here are some steps to help you determine the best option for your needs:

Assess the Value of Your Belongings

Take an inventory of your belongings and estimate their value. Consider factors such as the age, condition, and replacement cost of each item. This will give you a better understanding of the coverage amount you require.

Evaluate the Level of Risk

Think about the potential risks associated with your move. Are you moving long-distance, crossing state lines, or encountering extreme weather conditions? Assessing the level of risk involved can help you determine the appropriate coverage you need.

Read and Understand the Policies

Carefully review the insurance policies offered by your moving company and any third-party insurers you’re considering. Pay close attention to coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, and claim procedures. Ensure that the coverage aligns with your expectations and needs.

Seek Recommendations and Do Your Research

Ask friends, family, or Jernick Moving and Storage for recommendations on reputable insurance providers. Research customer reviews and ratings to get a sense of their reliability and customer satisfaction.

Request Quotes and Compare Options

Reach out to multiple insurance providers to request quotes. Compare the coverage, deductibles, premiums, and additional benefits offered by each provider. Consider the reputation, financial stability, and customer support provided by the insurer.

Moving insurance is an essential aspect of protecting your belongings during the moving process. By understanding the types of coverage available and carefully considering your needs, you can make an informed decision.
