8 Weeks Before the Move
Create a moving folder or binder to keep track of important documents, receipts, and contact information.
Research moving companies and obtain quotes.
Decide whether to hire professional movers or move on your own.
Notify your current landlord (if applicable) about your intent to move and schedule a move-out inspection.
Start decluttering your belongings and donate or sell items you no longer need.
Gather packing supplies such as boxes, tape, markers, bubble wrap, and packing paper.
6 Weeks Before the Move
Notify your new landlord or real estate agent of your move-in date.
Call utility companies (electricity, gas, water) to schedule disconnection at your current address and connection at your new address.
Notify internet, cable/satellite TV, and phone service providers about the move and schedule transfers or cancellations.
Inform the post office of your change of address and set up mail forwarding.
Update your address with banks, credit card companies, insurance providers, and other financial institutions.
Make a detailed inventory of your belongings for insurance purposes.
Begin packing non-essential items and label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to.
4 Weeks Before the Move
Schedule a move-out cleaning or make arrangements to clean your current home before leaving.
Pack a separate essentials box with items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home.
Notify your employer, school, and any clubs or organizations you’re a part of.
Update your address on your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and voter registration.
Arrange for the transfer of school records for your children.
Transfer medical records to new doctors or medical facilities.
2 Weeks Before the Move
Confirm the details with the moving company or truck rental service, including the scheduled time of arrival.
Double-check all rooms, closets, and storage areas to ensure nothing is left behind.
Take final meter readings for utilities at your current address.
Pack a suitcase with clothing, toiletries, and other necessities for the first few days in your new home.
Settle any outstanding bills or payments related to your previous home.
Moving Day!
Be present during the move to supervise the process and provide instructions or contact information.
Keep an inventory of your belongings as they are loaded onto the moving truck.
Conduct a final walkthrough of your old home to ensure nothing is left behind.
Take final meter readings for utilities if required.
Lock all windows and doors, and turn off all lights and appliances.
Make sure you have your personal belongings, for example, purse, car keys, essential paperwork, etc. set aside.
After the Move
Conduct a thorough inspection of your new home to ensure everything is in order. ❂
Unpack essential items first and gradually unpack and organize the remaining boxes, one room at a time.
Set up necessary services and utilities at your new address. Register children at their new schools and arrange for the transfer of school records.
Transfer medical records to new doctors or medical facilities.
Update your address with the DMV, vehicle insurance provider, and update your auto club membership if necessary.
Find new service providers such as doctors, dentists, veterinarians, and other professionals in your new neighborhood.
Register to vote at your new address if applicable.
