Moving Day Essentials

Moving day can be a hectic and exhausting experience, but with the right preparation, you can ensure a smooth transition to your new home. As you pack up your belongings and coordinate with your moving company, it’s important to have a set of essential items on hand to make the process more comfortable and convenient. Here’s a comprehensive list of moving day essentials that every customer should consider having.

These tips are taken from our free moving guide "Jernick's Guide To A Stress-Free Move". We give a hard copy version of this booklet to our customers as part of their onboarding package. You can download our moving guide here.

Snacks and Water

Moving can be physically demanding, and it’s easy to neglect your nutritional needs amidst the chaos. Keep a stash of snacks such as energy bars, fruits, and nuts readily available to keep your energy levels up. Don’t forget to have an ample supply of water or other hydrating beverages to stay refreshed throughout the day.

First Aid Kit

Accidents can happen, especially when you’re handling heavy furniture or navigating tight spaces. Be prepared by having a basic first aid kit that includes band-aids, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications. Prioritize your safety and address minor injuries promptly.

Essential Tools

Having a set of basic tools can prove invaluable during the moving process. Keep items such as a utility knife, screwdrivers, pliers, and a hammer handy. You may need these tools for disassembling furniture, removing nails, or opening boxes. A tape measure can also come in handy for assessing the dimensions of doorways or furniture.

Cleaning Supplies

Before you bid farewell to your old residence, it’s important to leave it in a clean state. Pack a small cleaning kit containing surface cleaners, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and garbage bags. This will allow you to tidy up any messes that occur during the moving process and ensure you leave the premises in good condition.

Phone Charger and Electronics

In today’s connected world, it’s crucial to have your phone charged and easily accessible. You’ll need it to communicate with your moving company, update your address with relevant parties, and stay in touch with friends and family. Keep your charger and other essential electronics, such as laptops or tablets, easily accessible during the move.

Personal Documents and Valuables

Moving day can be chaotic, and misplacing important documents or valuables is a common concern. Gather your personal identification documents, financial records, jewelry, and other valuable items, and keep them in a secure and easily accessible location. Consider carrying these items with you personally to minimize the risk of loss or damage.

Change of Clothes and Toiletries

After a long day of moving, you’ll likely want to freshen up and relax. Pack a change of clothes, toiletries, and towels in an easily accessible bag. This will help you quickly settle into your new space without having to rummage through boxes to find essential items for personal hygiene.

Important Contact Information

Compile a list of important contact information, including your moving company’s phone number, real estate agents, utility providers, and emergency services in both your old and new locations. Keep this list readily available in case you need to make any last-minute calls or encounter any unexpected issues.
